Cracked Concrete Driveways: Quick And Easy Repairs

Repairing small cracks in your cement driveway, those up to a 1/4 inch wide, can be done with a shop-vac and some silicone sealant. Remove any dust and loose material in and around the cracked cement with a small brush and/or the shop-vac. Then squeeze the silicone calking into the crack in the driveway and use a finger, or a putty knife, along with paint thinner, to give the silicone a smooth finished look.

To repair bigger concrete driveway cracks, grab a concrete repair kit from Ace Hardware or Sears, or order one online from Amazon.com or Buy.com. Fixing the cracked concrete will require a hand held grinder for deepening and widening the crack in the cement, as well as a bucket, trowel and shop-vac.

Clean the crack with a brush, or the shop-vac, to remove any broken pieces of concrete or gravel that could be thrown up by the grinding wheel. Use the hand grinder to grind the crack in the driveway to a depth of 1/2" or more. Make sure you grind the crack in the concrete it's full length, so that moisture can't get in the ends of the crack when you're done. Now that the crack has been chased across the driveway to a uniform depth, use the shop vac to remove any dust and debris from the work area.

If you are using a crack filler that uses a primer, use the primer that came with your crack repair kit as directed. But, if there aren't any instructions, primers are usually just brushed or injected into the crack, where they tend to get absorbed and drawn into the concrete by capillary action. Sprinkle a fine layer of sand over the primer while it's still wet, and then let it stand until it's dry to the touch.

Once the primer is dry, fill the crack with your liquid commercial crack filler, and while it's still wet, fill the crack with masonry sand. Use a trowel to smooth out and remove any of the extra masonry sand and cement repair compound. While the extra sand and crack filler are still damp, use it to fill any low spots in the driveway crack. Finish the driveway repair job, when the filler is dry, by using the grinder to remove any lumps or bumps left over, and to blend the two concretes.
